Inaugural HIFU Launch in India

Sonablate 500 HIFU, a non operative and non-radiation mode of treating prostate cancer through robotic High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) was introduced at a city hospital.

This is the first such facility in the country.

Launching the Sonablate 500 HIFU in the city on Wednesday, the Chief Minister, Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhar, said that this was an innovation in the field of urology. He praised Professor Naren Sanghvi, president of the Focus Surgery, Indianapolis, USA for the new initiative and Dr. Ramesh Ramayya, chief of urology and HIFU services at Pramila hospital, for providing this technology to prostate cancer patients.

"It is interesting to know that in a simple way, this technology replaces the radiation method of treatment," the Chief Minister said.

Dr. Ramesh Ramayya, said: "The technology is minimally invasive, far safer and effective compared to the existing therapy of surgery and radiotherapy," he said.

Among cancers affecting men, the incidence of prostate cancer is the second highest and those above 50 years are most likely to be affected.

Film producer, Dr. D. Ramanaidu, released a book on prostate cancer awareness.

Senior Urologist in Mumbai-based Jaslok Hospital, Dr. Madhav Kamat, said that HIFU technology can completely cure with minimum morbidity.

International HIFU vice-president, Mr. Alex Gonzalez, said that it is a paradigm shift in precision driven non-invasive therapy. The cost of the treatment will be around Rs 4 lakh and it requires no hospitalisation and the patient will recuperate the same day.
